Maternal Serum Screening
Maternal Serum Screening is a simple, cost-effective test that is recommended in all pregnancies in which
prenatal diagnosis is not performed.
Technique:
It is an inexpensive, noninvasive blood test which evaluates maternal serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP),
human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and unconjugated estriol (UE3).
An elevated MSAFP indicates the possible presence of a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida or anencephaly,
while a low MSAFP and UE3 and high hCG suggest an increased risk for Down syndrome. The Triple Test can detect
approximately 60% or more of all fetuses with Down syndrome and some other chromosomal abnormalities. Maternal blood
for this test is optimally obtained between 14 and 22 weeks of pregnancy.
Maternal Serum Screening Value:
The triple test is recommended for screening purposes only. It cannot be used as a diagnostic procedure because the
test has been designed only to alert the clinician to the possible presence of a pregnancy complication. If the result is
abnormal, genetic counseling, ultrasound evaluation and further testing by amniocentesis may be indicated and may be
arranged through our office. The Maternal Serum Sreening benefits include:
- Presents no risk
- Provide reasonal detection rate
- Obtained at a low cost
- Includes prompt telephone report with recommendations
