Paternity Testing
Paternity testing at RGI is done using multiple DNA markers that can allow the
determination of paternity. These markers can assure the inclusion of a man as
father with greater than 99.9% probability and exclusion of a man not the father
with 100% probability. Other use of these markers can be for determination of maternity
(identification of the mother).
Tests Offered
Paternity with samples from mother, child and alleged father. Most common test which
can be used in court.
- Paternity samples from child and father only. Often may not be used in court.
- Paternity testing on prenatal samples.*
- Chorionic villus samples (CVS) taken between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy.
- Amniocentesis samples taken after 14 weeks of pregnancy
* When prenatal (CVS or amniocentesis) samples are obtained by RGI physicians it is
required that the samples also be tested for chromosomes to avoid the possibility of
chromosome based birth defects. The taking of the samples and chromosome testing is an
added cost. Samples obtained elsewhere must also have chromosome testing.
