Periumbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS)
The Reproductive Genetics Institute's Periumbilical Blood Sampling involves obtaining a sample
of fetal blood from the umbilical cord under ultrasound guidance. This test is performed from 18
weeks of pregnancy to identify disorders such as hemoglobinopathies or Rh incompatibility,
or to follow up a diagnosis in cases of chromosomal mosaicism detected by CVS or amniocentesis.
Technique:
The abdomen is thoroughly washed with an iodine solution to prevent infection. Continuous ultrasound
is used to guide the physician. The procedure usually takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending
on the case. The fetus is monitored for 1-2 hours after the procedure, to make sure everything is ok.
The patient is asked to decrease their activity for 1 day after the procedure to help keep the uterus quiet.
Periumbilical Blood Sampling Value:
The Periumbilical Blood Sampling is used to:
- Check the fetal blood type and see if the fetus is anemic
- Count the number of chromosomes of the fetus, and see if parts are missing
- Provide faster results than amniocentesis (1-3 days versus 2-3 weeks)
